Fatal Monday Crash Claims Lives and Leaves Multiple Injuries
Maricopa police responded to a significant traffic incident yesterday that temporarily blocked a major intersection shortly after a long-awaited rain shower. The two-car accident occurred at the intersection of John Wayne Parkway and Hathaway Avenue around 1:45 p.m., shortly after the city had seen its first rain in 147 days.
The collision involved a newer gray Honda Odyssey SUV and a teal Ford Mustang from the early 2000s. According to police spokeswoman Monica Williams, the preliminary investigation indicated that a vehicle failed to yield the right of way while making a left turn, although the specific vehicle at fault remains undetermined.
“Minor injuries were reported,” Williams confirmed. “The roadway was impacted for approximately an hour before all lanes reopened.” This incident is part of a concerning trend at the John Wayne-Hathaway intersection, which has seen at least three major crashes in the last few months; two of these incidents resulted in hospitalizations.
Notably, last month, 30-year-old Jessica J. Guevara Reyes was arrested at this intersection after allegedly driving under the influence, crashing through a power pole and a residential fence with a child in the vehicle.
