Family Uncovers Covert Camera Masquerading as Smoke Detector in Scottsdale Airbnb, Lawsuit Alleges

In a shocking turn of events, a family vacationing in Scottsdale discovered a hidden camera disguised as a smoke detector above their bed. This alarming incident is at the heart of a federal lawsuit against both the property owner and Airbnb, with ongoing investigations by the Scottsdale Police Department.
The family had booked their stay in March 2024, expecting a relaxing five-night getaway at a vacation rental for $2,779. However, their trip took a distressing turn after the first night.
As the parents reclaimed some intimacy in their bedroom, they noticed the smoke detector positioned unusually. Upon closer inspection, it became apparent that it was, in fact, a camera, revealing a memory card containing footage of previous guests dating back to 2020.
Joseph Brown of the Accident Law Group, representing the family, expressed grave concerns about the invasion of privacy. “This is a clear violation, and it raises serious questions,” he said. The family feared the ramifications of what footage had been captured, particularly regarding their two children.
“Were their kids filmed? What else could have been recorded?” questioned Brown, emphasizing the uncertainty lingering over the family’s experience. They quickly contacted both the Scottsdale PD and Airbnb as they hastily packed their belongings to leave.
Airbnb responded to the incident, stating that hidden cameras are strictly prohibited on their platform. The company mentioned that they had suspended the host in question and pledged to assist law enforcement with the ongoing investigation.
However, Brown expressed frustration at the lack of responsiveness from Airbnb. “We’ve had more reaction from them than from the property owner, who hasn’t returned our multiple calls and inquiries,” he remarked. This prompted the family’s decision to take legal action.
Records indicate that the property owner was cited for not having a proper vacation rental license and failing to respond to issues at the rental property. The police investigation remains active as concerns about the homeowner’s intentions continue to loom.
Brown noted the disturbing implications of the hidden camera, questioning why it had been installed in such a private setting. “It’s shocking to think that this could happen,” he said, urging a deeper investigation into the matter.
