'Dillon was an exceptional soul': Family speaks about man killed in central Phoenix hit-and-run

PHOENIX — A man has died following a hit-and-run incident in central Phoenix, leading to the arrest of 24-year-old Travis Smith, who now faces serious charges, including manslaughter.

Police responded to reports of a crash near 16th Street and Camelback Road around 12:30 a.m. on September 21. Upon arrival, officers discovered Dillon Mares, 29, suffering from critical injuries. Unfortunately, he did not survive.

Authorities indicated that Smith, the driver implicated in the incident, fled the scene but left behind his vehicle. He later contacted the police, admitting to being the driver involved in the crash and acknowledging that he had abandoned the scene.

After being treated for injuries sustained during the incident, Smith was booked into the Maricopa County jail. His charges include manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision that resulted in a fatality or serious harm.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Smith’s vehicle was headed southbound on 16th Street when it reportedly ran a red light, colliding with Mares’ car traveling west through the intersection.

As the investigation unfolds, Mares’ family has expressed their grief. In a statement, they described him as an exceptional individual who brought joy to everyone around him. They mentioned the profound impact he had on many lives and expressed gratitude for the support they have received during this difficult time.

The family has also set up a GoFundMe page to aid with funeral and travel expenses.
