Family says teen killed in Avondale shooting was a 'bright light'


AVONDALE, Ariz. — A shooting in Avondale has resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy, identified as Nathan Smith by his family. The incident occurred on June 1, prompting multiple emergency calls to the police.

Officers responded to the scene near Flanagan Street and 108th Avenue, where they discovered Smith suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead by Avondale Fire & Medical personnel.

Nathan’s family expressed their grief on a GoFundMe page, stating, “Nathan was a bright light in our lives—full of laughter, love, and kindness. His presence brought warmth to everyone who knew him, and his absence leaves a hole that can never be filled.”

The Avondale Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau is currently leading the investigation. As of now, no suspects have been apprehended.
