Kenya's Faith Kipyegon has 5000m silver reinstated after successful appeal

Officials initially disqualified her for making contact with Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay during the final laps of the race.

PARIS, France — Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon had her silver medal reinstated after she was disqualified in the women’s 5000-meter race.

In the final laps, there was pushing between Kipyegon and Tsegay as they vied for the lead in the last 800 meters.

Originally, officials disqualified Kipyegon due to the altercation. Beatrice Chebet, Kipyegon’s teammate, then claimed the gold with a time of 14:28.56.

Kenya appealed the decision, which was subsequently overturned. This reinstated Kipyegon’s silver status.

The initial disqualification had shifted the medals: Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands took silver, and Italy’s Nadia Battocletti claimed bronze. The successful appeal pushed Hassan back to third, leaving Battocletti medalless.
