Explore Nature: Join ‘Walk for the Wild’ This National Wildlife Refuge Week!
Residents may be surprised to learn about the Bill Williams River and Havasu National Wildlife Refuges, a treasure trove of protected wetlands nearby. JoAnn Fischetti, president of the Friends of the Bill Williams River and Havasu National Wildlife Refuges, is on a mission to change that perception. Her organization regularly organizes events aimed at raising awareness of the area, which boasts a 300-mile shoreline.
This weekend, Fischetti will lead the 2nd annual “Walk for the Wild,” an event designed to close out National Wildlife Refuge Week. This annual observance highlights the importance of the nation’s public lands and waters.
“Most people don’t even know they’re in the refuge,” Fischetti remarked. “They don’t know Mesquite Bay is in the refuge. They don’t know the sandbar is part of the refuge.” She emphasized that the coastline extends all the way to Needles.
The event features a variety of activities aimed at educating attendees. It kicks off at 9 a.m. with a 5K guided nature walk through the Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge. A photography walk led by photographer John West will follow at 9:30 a.m.
Local vendors such as Western Arizona Canoe & Kayak Outfitters and Master Gardeners will also be present. Families can participate in a scavenger hunt and interact with various animals on-site. “WACKO has generously donated paddle boards and kayaks, so attendees can choose between kayaking and walking, or even try both,” Fischetti said.
While the event is free, Fischetti encourages donations to support the nonprofit’s educational programs. “Nature gives us wondrous things, and now it’s time to get out there, enjoy them, and give back,” she stated.
The Walk for the Wild event will take place on Saturday at the Environmental Education building, located at 60911 State Route 95, Parker, at milepost 161. Participants can check in upon arrival and begin their adventure in nature.
