Experts Share Essential Safety Tips for Travelers to Mexico Following Tragic Murder of Two Arizona Women

Experts are assuring travelers that despite a recent State Department travel warning, popular destinations like Rocky Point in Sonora, Mexico, remain safe for visitors.
This reassurance follows the tragic incident involving two elderly sisters from Arizona, who were killed by armed assailants while traveling from Sonoyta to Caborca. The victims, aged 72 and 82, were found deceased inside their SUV, which had been shot at multiple times and subsequently rolled over.
Authorities discovered a stolen truck with firearms linked to the incident, but the criminal group responsible has not yet been apprehended. Maria Fernanda Arreguin, representing the Consulate for the Protection of Mexican Nationals in Phoenix, expressed her condolences, emphasizing the unexpected nature of such violence affecting both American and Mexican citizens.
In the wake of these events, Arreguin is providing guidance for those planning trips to Sonora, especially to popular spots like Rocky Point. She suggests early departures, stopping in public areas, and ensuring vehicle maintenance prior to travel. Using the Heroes Paisanos app for real-time travel updates is also advised.
“We tend to focus on the negatives, forgetting that many positive experiences exist in Mexico,” Arreguin added.
Although the U.S. Department of State has advised reconsideration of travel to Sonora due to concerns over crime and kidnapping, Arreguin highlighted ongoing efforts by both federal and local governments to enhance security across Mexico.
Mike Jarvinen, who runs a shuttle service named Head Out to Rocky Point, shared personal experiences proving that travel to the area can be safe. He noted his wife’s routine trips and emphasized the importance of leaving during daylight hours, maintaining a respectful demeanor, and ensuring all travel documents are in order.
“I find it very safe. Local law enforcement has been helpful, and travelers should abide by the same laws as in the U.S.,” Jarvinen stated.
As the holiday weekend approaches, many travelers are left weighing their options, but experts like Arreguin and Jarvinen continue to promote safe practices while enjoying the scenic beauty of Sonora.
