Exciting Campaign Kicks Off to Back Glendale Propositions 401 and 402

By Jonathan Eberle |
A new campaign named Yes for Glendale has been initiated, promoting Propositions 401 and 402, which will appear on the mail-in ballot on May 20. These propositions focus on essential land use and zoning modifications required for the VAI Resort, a major hospitality and entertainment project projected to create over 2,000 jobs and generate upwards of $2 billion in tax revenues.
Proposition 401 seeks to reclassify a 10-acre parcel intended for the resort’s corporate office as a “Corporate Commerce Center.” Meanwhile, Proposition 402 proposes amendments to the zoning plan, integrating this corporate office area into the overall project. Notably, both measures received prior approvals from the Glendale City Council.
Advocates of the propositions emphasize the significant economic advantages they would bring, arguing that the changes will lead to job creation and bolster local tax revenues. Leading the campaign is Grant Fisher, President and CEO of VAI Resort, who believes the project could substantially alter Glendale’s economic and entertainment landscape.
However, despite unanimous backing from the City Council, these measures have been placed on the ballot by Worker Power, the political arm of UniteHere Local 11, a California-based labor organization concerned with labor conditions and worker representation connected to the project.
Supporters of the propositions assert that out-of-state activists are trying to obstruct a valuable project for Glendale. Fisher has characterized the opposition as part of a wider movement that may adversely affect Arizona’s business climate.
The Yes for Glendale campaign has gained traction from various local leaders, including Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, Maricopa County Supervisor Debbie Lesko, and Speaker of the House Steve Montenegro, along with endorsements from law enforcement and business associations.
With Glendale voters poised to determine the fate of these land use adjustments, discussions surrounding the propositions are anticipated to intensify in the following weeks. More information about the Yes for Glendale campaign can be accessed at yesforglendale.com.
