annual Toy Drive
Ex-Foster Kid Vows to Fight for Joy This Christmas: “I Will Beg Until My Last Breath”
Masai’s Playhouse Gives Back, a nonprofit co-founded by Kimber Shelton-Webster, is gearing up for its sixth annual Hope for the Holidays Christmas Toy Drive, aiming to support children and families in Maricopa. Shelton-Webster’s own experiences in the foster care system, marked by frequent relocations, have deeply influenced her commitment to this cause.
The toy drive will run until December 21, with a goal to provide gifts for 127 foster children, including many teenagers. “I always say this every year: As long as we get one toy for each of the kids, I will be so happy because we just don’t know if those kids will be getting another gift from anyone else,” she stated.
Residents can drop off toys at various locations, including IHOP and the Maricopa Moose Lodge. Those wishing to contribute in other ways can donate money through the nonprofit’s PayPal account or purchase items from its Amazon Wishlist. With time running short for online orders to arrive by the deadline, Shelton-Webster advised that some items are available for same-day delivery.
On the final day of the toy drive, Masai’s Playhouse will host its Hope in the Park event from 5 to 9 p.m. at Central Arizona College’s Maricopa campus. This festive gathering will feature Santa Claus, who will be providing free professional photos, live entertainment, and various activities for children and their families.
The event will include a live DJ, face painting, holiday crafts, a Christmas movie screening, and more. Local businesses have generously donated their services, lending support to both the event and the foster children in the community. Shelton-Webster emphasized the importance of these gatherings, noting that they offer joy and connection to children who may be struggling.
Admission is free, but the nonprofit requests each family to donate a toy valued at $15 or more, while the hot chocolate station will have a nominal fee. Despite occasional pushback regarding fundraising efforts, Shelton-Webster remains resolute. “I will beg until my last breath for a child who needs anything,” she affirmed. “If we do a little bit to try to fill them with goodness and love, it can really make a difference for the entire community.”
