EMILY’s List Unveils Bold Strategy to Transform U.S. House Landscape by 2026

A prominent advocacy group dedicated to electing Democratic women who champion abortion rights announced on Wednesday its intention to target 46 Republican-held U.S. House seats in the upcoming midterm elections. The group aims to transform the House from a Republican majority to a Democratic one.
“In 2026, we must take back the majority in the U.S. House to create a federal check on Donald Trump and combat GOP attacks on our rights and livelihoods,” stated EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler. She emphasized the crucial role of pro-choice Democratic women in reclaiming competitive districts across the nation, sending a clear message to House Republicans: “We are coming for your seats.”
During the contentious 2024 elections, Democrats narrowly lost control of the House, with Republicans securing 220 seats compared to Democrats’ 215. Internal debates among Democrats have surfaced regarding the most effective strategy to counter Trump’s policies.
EMILYs List provided several reasons for believing that the targeted Republican incumbents do not deserve to remain in office, primarily focusing on their stances regarding abortion access. The organization highlighted GOP lawmakers who endorsed a 62-page amicus curiae brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2021, advocating for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which would abolish the constitutional right to abortion.
Additionally, the group called out specific Republicans for sponsoring national abortion bans and for voting against legislation aimed at securing contraceptive rights free from government intervention. The targeted House members represent districts classified as toss-ups or those leaning towards one party, as determined by the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter.
As the 2026 elections approach, EMILYs List joins various leftist organizations in strategizing efforts to secure Democratic victories. Historical trends favor the party out of power in presidential elections, but prevailing polls indicate challenges ahead. A recent NBC News poll revealed only 7% of voters hold a “very positive” view of the Democratic Party, with an additional 27% expressing general approval.
