Elon Musk leaves Trump administration after turbulent effort to slash government, AP source says

WASHINGTON D.C. — Elon Musk announced his departure from his advisory role to President Donald Trump, effective immediately. Musk’s exit comes shortly after he voiced strong criticism regarding Trump’s significant budget proposal, expressing disappointment with its constraints on federal spending.

In a post on X, Musk conveyed gratitude for his time as a Special Government Employee, highlighting efforts to combat wasteful expenditures. He emphasized that the mission of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) would persist in influencing government operations.

A White House official confirmed Musk’s resignation, which coincides with his critical comments on Trump’s legislative agenda. Musk referred to the proposed budget as a “massive spending bill,” arguing that it contradicts the goals set forth by DOGE. He questioned its capacity to balance taxation and immigration enforcement effectively.

While defending his agenda in the Oval Office, Trump acknowledged some discontent with the bill, promising that negotiations will continue. He urged lawmakers to minimize changes, citing the delicate balance achieved in the House.

Some Republican senators share Musk’s reservations about the bill. Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson expressed solidarity, asserting that there is sufficient opposition to slow its progress unless the administration approaches spending cuts more seriously.

In response to Musk’s departure, Johnson thanked him for his efforts and pledged to prioritize spending reductions. Furthermore, the White House is advocating for proposed rescissions, aiming to affirm DOGE’s findings and cancel previously sanctioned expenditures.

As Musk steps back from his government role, he plans to redirect his efforts towards his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX. He has also indicated a reduction in political donations, feeling he has played his part.

Musk’s interactions with Trump have been notably enthusiastic in the past, but his recent critiques may influence Republican sentiments about the ongoing budget debate. The potential ramifications of his departure on the legislative process remain uncertain.

Recent estimates from the Congressional Budget Office project that the bill will significantly increase federal deficits over the next decade, prompting skepticism from fiscal watchdogs regarding its long-term viability.
