Efforts Against 4 GOP Lawmakers Persist After Funding Bill Approval

Parents of children with disabilities in Arizona have initiated a recall effort targeting four Republican lawmakers. This move comes after accusations that the legislators blocked essential funding for the Division of Developmental Disabilities amid a budget shortfall.
The group, named Reclaim Our Arizona Representation (ROAR), is focusing on House Speaker Steve Montenegro and Representatives Matt Gress, Michael Carbone, and David Livingston. The initiative aims to gather thousands of signatures from registered voters before an August 15 deadline.
Historically, recall attempts in Arizona face numerous challenges. Only one successful effort has occurred in the state, which took place in 2011 when Jerry Lewis ousted then-Senator Russell Pearce, known for authoring the controversial SB1070 immigration law. Lewis emerged as a moderate candidate, gaining traction in a smaller district.
Since that time, multiple groups have attempted similar campaigns, often failing to meet signature requirements or encountering legal difficulties. Tyler Montague of the Arizona Public Integrity Alliance pointed out that the success of such campaigns often relies on strong organizational backing and public sentiment.
Despite the hurdles, ROAR remains committed. The group has organized community events and signature drives to mobilize support. Jim Fuller, the field director, emphasized their grassroots efforts and the determination of parents fighting for their children’s needs. “We’ve got people. We’ve got parents. And we’ve got a purpose,” Fuller stated.
As ROAR pursues its goal, it highlights the ongoing struggles for adequate support and representation for families of disabled children in Arizona.
