EDITOR’S LETTER: Unleashing the Power of the ‘Toon’

Last month, we engaged our readers with a pivotal question: If you could change one thing about Maricopa, what would it be?
The response was overwhelming, with hundreds of submissions pouring in. An analysis of these responses revealed a clear consensus: Fix State Route 347.
Addressing this widely recognized concern—transforming one of Arizona’s most hazardous and congested highways— has proved to be a lengthy endeavor. In our latest magazine issue, we chose to visually represent this imperative. Allow me to elaborate.
Before settling in Maricopa, I dedicated years to working across SR 347 at the Phoenix New Times, where my appreciation for illustrated magazine covers blossomed. These covers serve as a unique canvas for journalists, allowing us to convey deep emotions and essential information without relying solely on text.
Our magazine’s inaugural illustrated cover debuted in March 2024, celebrating our 20th anniversary. It marked a significant milestone for our newsroom. Now, you have in your hands our second illustrated cover, which is equally noteworthy.
This month’s feature examines the city’s ambitious plans for SR 347—an initiative so bold that it may actually succeed. Additionally, the edition includes insightful stories, such as David Iversen’s piece on combating illegal dumping through dubious doxxing tactics.
Furthermore, congratulations are in order for Maricopa’s largest graduating class in 2025, particularly at Desert Sunrise High School, where the “Pomp and Circumstance” will play for the first time this month.
These newly minted graduates are poised to represent Maricopa on a larger stage. It’s inspiring to think that some may return, perhaps even aspiring to follow a career in journalism.
