EDITOR’s LETTER: Nerding out

Reflecting on the past, the connections that shape our lives often surprise us. In the 2000s, I began my mornings with the Charlotte Observer, immersing myself in its stories. I distinctly recall seeing former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on the front page during Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign in 2007. At that time, I was just a grade schooler unaware of the significance he would later hold in my life.

Fast forward a decade and a half, and I found myself living next door to Arpaio in Fountain Hills, Arizona. It became a peculiar experience, occasionally walking to his house on Vía Del Sol, which sparked my curiosity. This led me to spend a year investigating him for a cover story titled “Inside Joe’s Brain” for the Phoenix New Times.

Such full-circle moments can be delightful. For instance, this month, Brian Petersheim Jr. reconnected with his former Maricopa High School teacher, Brad Chamberlain. Many can relate to the oddity of encountering a teacher outside the classroom. In a more unconventional setting, he found Chamberlain in a dimly lit foosball hall in Tempe.

Recently, one of our advertising professionals stumbled upon a group of hobbyists in a Maricopa computer repair shop. This chance encounter led to David Iversen’s feature on the Belegarth Medieval Combat Society on our magazine’s cover, showcasing diverse interests within the community.

Escaping from reality can take various forms. For instance, state representatives sometimes find refuge in secluded offices, sipping Coke Zero away from the legislative chaos. Monica D. Spencer gained insights into the daily lives of those representing Maricopa during her week at the Capitol.

Revisiting cherished memories also brings joy, as the girls who won Maricopa High School’s only state championship in 2015 reflect on their victories. Jeff Chew successfully captured their enthusiasm and nostalgia in a recent interview.

For me, my refuge has always been reading newspapers and magazines, much like the Charlotte Observer from my childhood. Whether you find solace in print journalism, participate in epic fantasy battles, or pursue other hobbies, dedicating time to your interests can provide much-needed respite. Maricopa, with its unique character, always welcomes you back for another adventure.
