Fiery car crash and explosion near Prescott ends in 70-year-old being taken into custody

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — James Crespo, a 70-year-old man, is in police custody following a chaotic series of events that led to a crash and an explosion involving his vehicle and a Prescott police car.

The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. Wednesday when Prescott police were alerted by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office about Crespo, who was wanted on multiple felony charges and had an outstanding arrest warrant from Maricopa County.

Authorities indicated that Crespo had made threats, suggesting he might be armed and was intent on causing harm, including to law enforcement personnel. During the search, officers spotted Crespo on Thumb Butte Road but he refused to stop when instructed.

Efforts to halt him included deploying spike strips near Idlewild Drive, which Crespo initially ignored. Instead, he lit a blow torch while behind the wheel before continuing deeper into a residential area.

Police later reported that Crespo deliberately rammed his vehicle into a police unit, triggering an explosion that ignited both cars and surrounding vegetation.

In a dangerous move, Crespo exited his burning car with a propane tank and a blow torch. Law enforcement utilized less-than-lethal force to apprehend him, and he was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Phoenix for treatment.

Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed in the incident. Local residents recounted their shock as loud explosions echoed through the neighborhood. One neighbor, Beverly, expressed her concern for her home’s safety, describing the sounds as reminiscent of bombs.

Nikalus, another resident, shared his astonishment at the events of the night, noting it was unlike anything he had ever witnessed in his four years living in the area.

The rapid response from Prescott police, Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies, and fire services was met with gratitude from the community, who emphasized their role in ensuring safety amid the chaos.

Officials are continuing their investigation, although details regarding Crespo’s condition remain undisclosed.
