Donald Trump Denies Backing Social Security Cuts

No, Donald Trump does not currently support cutting Social Security

Former President Donald Trump’s agenda explicitly calls for protecting entitlements, including Social Security, despite claims from Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Harris has been actively campaigning across the country. Many have raised questions about the claims she has made regarding Trump’s potential policies.

“Just look at his Project 2025 agenda. I take it you’ve seen it,” Harris said at a rally in July. “Project 2025 is a plan to weaken the middle class. And Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security.”

Tim Walz, Harris’s running mate, echoed these sentiments in his campaign speech, stating, “He’ll gut Social Security.”

But does Trump currently support cutting Social Security?

No, he does not. Despite connections to Project 2025, a proposal to implement numerous conservative policies, the project is not directly tied to Trump. He has consistently disavowed it in recent months. Furthermore, Project 2025 does not suggest any changes to Social Security.

Trump’s own policy plan, called Agenda47, explicitly states, “Under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut a single penny from… Social Security.” The Republican Party Platform also echoes this stance, emphasizing the protection of Social Security without cuts or changes to the retirement age.

Moreover, Trump has reinforced this on social media. On TruthSocial, he said, “We are going to shore up Social Security, making it much stronger, but with no cuts.”

Harris’s campaign has referenced a CNBC interview where Trump mentioned potential cuts to entitlements. However, he later clarified in a Breitbart interview that he was referring to cutting back on fraud, not cutting benefits.
