Dodgers' Dustin May speaks after returning to the mound for the 1st time since tearing esophagus

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May returned to the field after a life-threatening incident last July. He had a successful debut on Sunday against the San Diego Padres, showcasing his resilience following a harrowing experience that led to emergency surgery for a torn esophagus.

During a dinner outing, May bit into a salad that would change his life. The 2024 incident left him in severe pain after he accidentally swallowed a piece of lettuce in a way that obstructed his esophagus. Initially ignoring the discomfort, he eventually sought medical attention, advised by his wife, Millie. A CT scan revealed that the contrast fluid he ingested had entered his chest instead of his stomach, necessitating immediate surgery.

May described the terrifying experience, stating, “As soon as the water hit the salad, it just was full body on fire.” The emergency surgery lasted into the early hours, followed by an 11-day hospital stay and a rigorous six-month recovery period during which he could not lift over 10 pounds.

Reflecting on his journey, May expressed deep gratitude for his return to baseball. “The only way it would have stopped me is if I would have been six feet under,” he said. Now, he feels a renewed appreciation for his career and life, entering the 2025 season with a fresh perspective.

In his first appearance back, May pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out a batter. His performance marks a significant comeback, as this season he aims to deliver at the level he maintained before his injury.

“I’m just trying not to swallow fast, I guess,” he added, hinting at newfound caution in his everyday life. May’s story stands as a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity and the unpredictable traumas athletes can encounter off the field.
