'Tis the season for disposing of household hazardous waste

This weekend, Tucson residents have the opportunity to responsibly dispose of hazardous household items during the city’s monthly waste collection event. Scheduled for Saturday, December 14, the event will take place at Jacobs Park, located at 3300 N. Fairview Ave., from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Environmental and General Services Department will accept various materials, including paints, oils, electronic waste, recyclables, glass bottles, and up to three boxes of sensitive documents for shredding. Notably, the disposal service is free for Tucson residents, while those from nearby suburbs or unincorporated Pima County will incur a $10 fee.

However, there are restrictions on what will be accepted. The city will not allow disposal of unknown chemicals, commercial waste, gas cylinders, CRT monitors, explosives, ammunition, infectious or radioactive waste, dried paint, or medical waste. A complete list of acceptable items is available through official city resources.

In addition to the monthly event, residents can drop off household hazardous waste at the city’s Los Reales Sustainability Campus, 5300 E. Los Reales Rd. This service operates on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the exception of Saturdays when the monthly collection occurs.

Looking ahead, the following household hazardous waste collection event is set for Saturday, January 11, at Pima Community College East, located at 8181 E. Irvington Rd. For a full schedule of collection dates and additional information, residents can refer to city resources.
