As 2024 draws to a close, Tucson Sentinel music writers Julie Jennings Patterson and Xavier Omar Otero reflect on the standout local music releases from the year.

Freezing Hands – Live at Tap and Bottle

The Freezing Hands have established themselves as the epitome of Tucson’s power pop scene. Led by songwriter-vocalist-guitarist Travis Spillers, this group unites talented friends weekly to share music, discuss baseball, and create memorable pop hooks. Their latest release, a live album, captures the essence of their energetic 1979-inspired performances, embodying an exuberant spirit that evokes the likes of the Quick or the Knack, enhanced by Matt Rendon’s drums and Scott Landrum’s keyboards, while Kevin Conklin holds down the bass.

Female Gaze – Tender Futures

After four years in the making, “Tender Futures” showcases Female Gaze’s evolution from indie rock to an experimental art prog sound. This album flows seamlessly, intended to be listened to repeatedly, allowing listeners to jump in at any point. Its approachable yet proggy nature, complemented by Nelene DeGuzman’s intricate guitar work and Kevin Conklin’s bass lines, creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Valley Fever embodies the essence of 1970s Californian country rock. Their sound melds the influences of Neil Young with southern and blues rock, evoking a sense of nostalgia. Class – A Healthy Alternative

Class stands out for their prolific output, releasing albums at an astonishing rate. Their style pays homage to punk roots, blending influences from iconic venues like CBGBs and pivotal moments in punk history. Their music brings back memories of classic tracks that defined a generation.

Joe Jennings MVPs – Nothing Wrong with Giving Up

Multi-instrumentalist Joe Jennings makes a striking debut with “Nothing Wrong with Giving Up.” This album mixes West Coast power pop with 80s pub rock elements, drawing comparisons to legends like Elvis Costello and The Cars. Lenguas Largas – Warm Maneuvers
