Glennwilde resident Bernard Porporino has made impressive strides in the world of confectionery in just one year. He transformed from a middleman to the owner of B & P Freeze Dry Candy, now selling approximately 16,000 units primarily through TikTok.

Starting with a single freeze dryer, Porporino and his wife Priscilla have expanded their operation to four machines, running them nearly around the clock. “We bake candy from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.,” he explained, highlighting the family-centered nature of the business. Their son occasionally lends a hand as demand grows.

One product gaining rapid popularity is the freeze-dried Skittles, affectionately dubbed “Skizzies.” These crunchy treats come in various flavors, including regular, sour, and wild berry, and have amassed around a million views in one of their TikTok videos. Beyond online sales, B & P Freeze Dry Candy products are also available at local retailers like Water and Ice and The Smokers Edge in Maricopa.

Building the business has required relentless effort. “It takes a lot of time, marketing, and setup,” Porporino noted. He manages all marketing initiatives and customer relations himself while handling logistics like purchasing Mylar bags and printing shipping labels.

Despite the success, challenges have emerged, particularly with certain customers. “We encounter scammers who claim to not receive their orders, even when they do,” he said. Nonetheless, Porporino remains committed to customer service, addressing issues as they arise.

Looking ahead, the couple aims to broaden their reach into brick-and-mortar stores. They’ve contacted several retailers for potential partnerships, including Fry’s Marketplace, Target, and 7-Eleven. Porporino envisions his products being served alongside popcorn in theaters, a perfect pairing for moviegoers.

In addition to expanding distribution, B & P Freeze Dry Candy plans to hire new products, such as freeze-dried Jolly Ranchers, though shipping challenges remain due to the candy’s fragility.

The Porporinos are ready to showcase their candies at their first in-person event at Merry Copa event on Saturday, where attendees can also sample freeze-dried Skittles. Their products range from $7.99 to $18.99, and free shipping is available on larger orders.

“We pride ourselves on quality,” Porporino stated. He emphasized that their freeze-dried candies offer a delightful texture, making them accessible for those with dental issues, allowing everyone to enjoy a sweet treat once more.
