Meet the Province woman who found a kidney on Nextdoor

Dawn, 68, and Alex Calamari, 72, of Province, have embarked on a challenging quest to secure a kidney transplant for Alex, whose health has sharply declined due to a series of medical issues. Following five months of rigorous searching, the couple turned to social media as a last resort.

Alex’s kidney failure stemmed from severe complications, including sepsis and heart surgery, compounded by the effects of strong antibiotics. In 2023, he contracted Covid-19, and according to Dawn, the antiviral treatment, Remdesivir, “basically took him down.”

Realizing the urgency of their situation, with Alex’s kidney function plummeting to a critical 12%, Dawn took immediate action. “I got up in the middle of the night and wrote this thing and put it out there,” she recalled, noting the overwhelming support they’ve received from their community.

The Mayo Clinic in Phoenix recommended that they reach out through platforms like Nextdoor to enhance their search for a Type O kidney. This suggestion yielded a wave of community solidarity, with offers of support pouring in, including one local woman who expressed her willingness to donate her kidney. Although she was not a match for Alex, her donation could facilitate another transplant, freeing up a kidney for him.

While they have not yet secured a match, the Calamaris remain hopeful. Dawn stated, “I don’t know how this is going to play out and I’m just trusting whatever happens, happens.” Their journey has showcased the power of community, with Dawn emphasizing that the compassion shown to them—whether through prayers or kind wishes—makes a significant difference amid the challenges they face.
