Meet the black dogs of Mohave County Animal Shelter ready for adoption

October 1 marks National Black Dog Day, a day dedicated to honoring black dogs in shelters seeking permanent homes. Unfortunately, these dogs are frequently overlooked, particularly in favor of puppies, who are generally adopted more quickly.

As of September 26, the Mohave County Animal Shelter reported an intake of over 2,100 dogs for the year, with 700 of those being puppies. This situation leaves numerous adult dogs without families.

Lynn Kannianen, President of Friends of Mohave County Animal Shelter, highlighted this issue: “We absolutely see that black dogs are often overlooked. They tend to blend into their kennels, making it difficult for visitors to notice them.” There remains a societal hesitation towards adopting black animals, which contributes to their lower visibility.

In addition to these societal factors, National Black Dog Day brings attention to “Black Dog Syndrome” (BDS). This phenomenon suggests that lighter-colored dogs are favored over darker ones. Theories associated with BDS often intersect with cultural superstitions surrounding black pets.

Interestingly, one reason for the abundance of black dogs might be their prevalence as a dominant coat color. In the U.S., black Labradors rank as one of the most popular breeds, known for their loyalty, intelligence, and adaptability. They make excellent family pets and are often utilized as service animals because of their trainability and affectionate nature.

However, the challenge deepens when considering photography. Prospective pet adopters often browse online for their future companions, and black dogs can be difficult to photograph effectively. Their features may not stand out like those of lighter-colored dogs, which can result in being overlooked even if they possess appealing personalities.

A visit to the shelter reveals the extraordinary nature of these black dogs. Each has a unique story and a personality waiting to shine. The shelter invites individuals to meet these pets in person to appreciate their distinctiveness.

On Thursday, Friends of Mohave County Animal Shelter was granted support from Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah, to help boost adoption rates. This funding covers the adoption fees for all adult dogs over 40 pounds.

For more details about the adoption process, potential adopters can visit friendsofmcas.org or stop by the Mohave County Animal Shelter at 3423 N. Burbank St. The shelter operates daily except Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
