Discover the Elite: Sports Teams That Dominated with Three-Peat Championships

A championship three-peat is a rare accomplishment, with no teams in the NFL, NBA, NHL, or MLB achieving this feat in over two decades.
WASHINGTON — The Kansas City Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, are poised to make history by attempting back-to-back-to-back Super Bowl victories against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday.
A win would mark the first time any NFL team has secured three consecutive Super Bowl titles. The Chiefs would join an elite list of dynasties that includes the 2000–02 Lakers, 1998–2000 Yankees, and the 1991–93 Bulls from other major sports.
The NFL has never seen a team win three straight Super Bowls. The only teams to accomplish consecutive championships were the Green Bay Packers, who won three titles across two periods: 1929-31 and 1965-67. The Packers attained this success before the Super Bowl format was established.
The Chiefs have made strides toward achieving this milestone, becoming the first team to return to the Super Bowl after two consecutive wins by defeating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship. Tom Brady’s New England Patriots, though dominant in the early 2000s, won just three Super Bowls in four years, failing to achieve three in a row.
Only eight teams in NFL history have successfully defended their Super Bowl title. Brady himself has expressed support for Mahomes, suggesting that seeing another player succeed doesn’t diminish his own achievements.
Should Mahomes succeed, he would earn his fourth championship, positioning him closer to the record set by Brady. “I love seeing other people achieve great things,” said Brady. “For people to detract from anything Patrick is doing, I don’t believe will ever detract from what I accomplished in my career.”
Across North America’s four major professional sports leagues, a total of seven three-peats have been recorded. The most recent example occurred in the NBA, when the Lakers, featuring Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, won three straight titles from 2000-02.
Here is a brief overview of the teams that have achieved a three-peat:
**Oakland Athletics (1972-74)**: With a roster including Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter, the A’s secured titles against the Reds, Mets, and Dodgers.
**Montreal Canadiens (1976-79)**: Under coach Scotty Bowman, the Canadiens dominated with Guy LaFleur and a solid defense, capturing four Stanley Cups.
**New York Islanders (1980-83)**: This team, led by Mike Bossy, won four consecutive championships, beginning with an overtime win in 1980.
**Chicago Bulls (1991-93, 1996-98)**: With icon Michael Jordan, the Bulls achieved two three-peats, establishing their dominance in the ’90s.
**New York Yankees (1998-2000)**: The Yankees dominated the league, winning three straight titles in the free agency era, capitalizing on a roster featuring stars like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.
**Los Angeles Lakers (2000-02)**: Phil Jackson guided a talented Lakers squad to three consecutive victories, overcoming challenges along the way.
**Houston Comets (1997-2000)**: The Comets remain the only WNBA team to achieve a three-peat, winning the first four titles in league history.
