Dick Vitale Triumphantly Returns to ESPN Commentating After Battling Cancer Four Times!

CLEMSON, S.C. — ESPN commentator Dick Vitale made a triumphant return to the broadcasting booth on Saturday night, receiving an enthusiastic standing ovation at Clemson’s Littlejohn Coliseum. This event marked his first game back after battling cancer for the past few years.
As Vitale entered the arena, the applause from the crowd was deafening. Excited fans greeted him with cheers, and the PA announcer playfully exclaimed, “Dickie V, you’re awesome, baby!” His emotional response reflected the love and support he has garnered from basketball fans throughout his fight.
Vitale hasn’t called a game for ESPN in two years due to health challenges. Over the course of four years, he has faced four types of cancer, including a battle with vocal cord cancer. Yet, following a PET scan in December that indicated he was cancer-free, he joyfully shared his good news on social media.
“SANTA CLAUS came early as Dr. Rick Brown called & said that my PET SCAN at 7 AM came back CLEAN OF CANCER!” Vitale posted on X. His enthusiasm was palpable as he described this news as a personal championship moment.
In preparation for his return, Vitale underwent surgery in the summer to remove cancerous lymph nodes. His extensive treatment history includes tackling melanoma and lymphoma, as well as radiation therapy last year for vocal cord cancer. Fans and colleagues alike are thrilled to see him back where he belongs, sharing his passion for the game.
