Diamondbacks Sign Closer Hopeful Justin Martinez to a Stunning $18 Million, 5-Year Deal

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed hard-throwing right-hander Justin Martinez to an $18 million, five-year contract. This agreement, announced Saturday, enhances his prospects as a potential closer for the team.

The new deal replaces an earlier one-year contract that was set for a $772,200 salary in the major leagues, along with $335,700 in the minors. The latest contract includes a $2 million signing bonus, alongside salary increments for the following years: $1.5 million in 2025, $2 million in 2026, $3 million in 2027, $4 million in 2028, and $5.5 million in 2029. Additionally, it contains club options of $7 million in 2030 and $9 million in 2031.

Manager Torey Lovullo has stated that the competition for the closer role remains open. Martinez, left-hander A.J. Puk, and right-hander Kevin Ginkel are all being considered. In the 2024 season, Martinez demonstrated his potential, achieving eight saves and posting a 2.48 ERA, though he had 36 walks over 72 2/3 innings.
