Diamondbacks Shut Out Pirates 5-0 with Nelson’s Stellar Performance, Ending 5-Game Losing Streak

PHOENIX — Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor propelled the Arizona Diamondbacks to a commanding 5-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, snapping a five-game losing streak. Ryne Nelson delivered an impressive performance on the mound, allowing just four hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out four while issuing no walks.
Suárez hit his 15th home run of the season, a blistering 109 mph shot that soared 433 feet to left-center, providing a crucial 3-0 advantage in the third inning. As the game progressed, he also walked in the fifth, setting the stage for Naylor’s sixth homer shortly thereafter.
With this win, the Diamondbacks improved their record to 27-27, reclaiming a .500 standing. Justin Martinez entered the game with bases loaded in the eighth but successfully stranded three inherited runners, demonstrating resilience under pressure. Ryan Thompson closed out the game, securing Arizona’s fifth shutout of the season.
The Pirates, now 19-36, faced their ninth shutout of the year, the most in Major League Baseball. They fell to 6-20 on the road with this loss, further solidifying their last-place standing in the league.
In the second inning, Randal Grichuk sparked the offense with a lead-off single. Gabriel Moreno followed with a double, leading to a sacrifice fly from Tim Tawa and a two-out RBI single by Ketel Marte, which put the Diamondbacks ahead 2-0.
Scott McGough struggled initially in the eighth, giving up two walks after an error, but Martinez came through, striking out Bryan Reynolds and shutting down the threat by handling two subsequent batters efficiently.
Pirates’ pitcher Andrew Heaney yielded five runs and eight hits over five innings. In contrast, Braxton Ashcraft made his major league debut, allowing only two hits in three shutout innings.
Marte, continuing his impressive streak, went 2 for 4 with a walk, marking his hitting streak at nine games. Following the matchup, the Diamondbacks rank third in the league with 75 home runs, while the Pirates languish at the bottom with just 37.
Looking ahead, RHP Mike Burrow (0-1, 7.20 ERA) is set for his second start for the Pirates on Tuesday. Meanwhile, RHP Corbin Burnes (3-2, 2.73) will take the mound for Arizona.
