Developer Unveils Bahama Avenue Resort: A Triumph for All

Lake Havasu City is poised for a significant decision today as its council evaluates a proposed resort development, which the developer claims will benefit the community and enhance local amenities.
The plan involves constructing a resort at 1850 Bahama Avenue that features five four-story residential buildings totaling 172 units, alongside a two-story commercial and restaurant facility, a surf pool, and a lagoon. The meeting will first address a general plan amendment request, followed by a request to rezone for planned development.
Cole Cannon, the developer, asserted that the project promises to create hundreds of jobs and generate considerable tax revenue, essential for funding schools and city services. It aims to alleviate the pressure short-term rentals impose on neighborhoods, points that have been reiterated in prior public hearings by the project’s team at Studio KDA.
Cannon emphasized the resort’s unique concept, highlighting its potential to serve as a vibrant community hub. He stated, “This resort is designed to be a dynamic hub — a place where locals can gather, families can have fun, and everyone can enjoy world-class amenities.” He mentioned the surf pool, which would be among only two in the nation, as a standout feature alongside various dining options.
In contrast to the proposed resort, the current zoning allows for a 280-unit apartment complex. Cannon argued that the resort represents a better option for the site. He remarked, “We believe this is the ideal use of the site and a win for everyone.” He also indicated readiness to pursue the apartment complex if the council and community prefer that route.
The idea of an apartment complex gained traction during a recent meeting of the Lake Havasu City Planning and Zoning Commission, where several commissioners voiced support for it. The commission previously voted 4-3 against the general plan amendment and unanimously rejected the planned development before revisions were made to the project proposal.
Meanwhile, local residents received text messages on Monday inviting them to participate in a brief survey about the project. Additionally, a flier circulated on Facebook encouraging community members to attend the City Council meeting and endorse the proposed resort.
