Developer to reconsider Bahama Avenue resort plans

Plans for a new resort on Bahama Avenue in Lake Havasu City are temporarily on hold.

Last month, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission rejected key proposals for the resort’s construction. The commission voted 4-3 against a general plan amendment and 7-0 against the planned development. This decision was initially set to be reviewed by the City Council next week, but that meeting has been postponed.

Jeff Thuneman from development services announced that the applicant, California-based Studio KDA, decided to reschedule the hearing.

“They’re reassessing the plan to address concerns raised in those meetings, and may return for the first meeting in September,” Thuneman stated.

Public feedback highlighted issues such as building height, traffic congestion, water usage, noise levels, and staffing needs.

The resort’s proposed site, located at 1850 Bahama Ave, is surrounded by commercial and residential properties. The initial proposal included developing a 14-acre area featuring six five-story buildings, two 5,000-square-foot restaurants, and multiple pools.

Private developer Cole Cannon of Cannon Development mentioned that public input has been meticulously considered. “We are modifying the plan to further reduce density and heights,” Cannon said.

Cannon emphasized the potential benefits of a high-end surf destination, aiming to offer a family-friendly environment for both locals and tourists. “There are few things on earth that unify people like the sound of crashing waves on a beach,” he added.

Under current zoning regulations, the landowner can build 280 units with a lower height allowance compared to the 221 units proposed in the resort plan.

As modifications to the project continue, no definitive date has been set for the next public hearing.
