Detectives Identify Suspect in Fatal Shooting Linked to Disappearance of Prescott Man
Authorities have discovered the vehicle of a missing Prescott man, Russel T. Vinton, in Craggy Wash this week, triggering a violent confrontation involving law enforcement. Vinton, last seen camping near the Grand Canyon, went missing alongside his vehicle last weekend.
On Wednesday at approximately 11 a.m., detectives from Lake Havasu City were following leads in the investigation when they located Vinton’s vehicle. A suspect, later identified as 61-year-old Patrick N. Champion, was inside the vehicle. According to the Bullhead City Police Department, Champion opened fire on the detectives without any prior warning.
The detectives swiftly took cover and returned fire. Champion then accelerated towards the officers, ramming their police vehicle before exiting Vinton’s truck. In the ensuing altercation, detectives shot Champion, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fortunately, neither detective was injured by gunfire; however, both were taken to Havasu Regional Medical Center due to injuries sustained in the collision. They have since been released from medical care.
Investigation efforts continue, with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office now overseeing the case. As of Thursday, authorities have not publicly disclosed any potential connections between Champion and Vinton, nor has Vinton been located.
