MARICOPA, AZ — A student at Desert Sunrise High School was arrested this morning following an altercation that resulted in injuries to a substitute teacher. The incident occurred on October 24, 2024, during fourth period, approximately between 10 and 11 a.m.
Witnesses reported that the conflict escalated after the teacher confiscated the student’s cell phone. A fellow student recalled, “The kid threw [the teacher] into the wall. There’s like, a dent, and it was all bloody.” The substitute teacher sustained minor cuts and bruises but declined further medical treatment after being evaluated by the school nurse.
Police spokesperson Monica Williams confirmed that an onsite school resource officer responded swiftly to the incident and called for backup. The Maricopa Police Department took the student into custody, booking him into the Pinal County Juvenile Detention Center in Florence. He faces charges of aggravated assault and disruption of school activities.
Mishell Terry, a spokesperson for the Maricopa Unified School District, stated that student discipline is confidential but assured that the situation was addressed in line with district policy. If found guilty, the student could face up to 12 years in prison and fines reaching $150,000.
