Desert Sunrise High School Sparks Political Debate on Constitution Day

On September 17, 2024, students at Desert Sunrise High School had a unique opportunity to engage with local government officials during an AP social studies class, celebrating Constitution Day.
This year marks the 237th anniversary since the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia. Among the participating students was Nathan Alarcon, a member of the school’s inaugural senior class. Alarcon spoke with Maricopa Vice Mayor Amber Liermann and State Representatives Teresa Martinez (R) and Keith Seaman (D) about their roles in government.
Alarcon expressed that learning how these officials address contemporary issues inspired him to deepen his understanding of governmental processes. “It inspired me to take action in my own understanding of the government,” he stated.
AP social studies teacher Connor Exline orchestrated the event as a concluding activity for a comprehensive unit on the Constitution. “It’s important to me that our students see and make connections with our elected officials,” he remarked. “They’re not just figureheads that we read about in the news; they truly represent us in our communities.”
State Rep. Martinez complimented the students on their insightful questions, while Rep. Seaman highlighted the importance of youth involvement in local politics, declaring, “I know it sounds cliché, but these kids are going to be leaders.”
Vice Mayor Liermann offered students various resources for civic engagement, such as the Maricopa Youth Council, to encourage their active participation before graduating. “I loved that they’re seniors and just about to start their life and they’re this engaged,” she said, reflecting on the enthusiasm of the students. “It was very exciting.”
