Tucson Mayor Regina Romero has publicly opposed Proposition 140, urging her supporters to cast their votes against it. On Wednesday, she shared a “Voter Guide” via Facebook, highlighting concerns over the proposed open primary system and ranked-choice voting for Arizona.

A bipartisan coalition is rallying against the proposition. This coalition includes various Democratic groups like Coconino County Democrats and Arizona Democrats Abroad, as well as prominent Republican organizations such as the Arizona Free Enterprise Club and Turning Point Action. This unusual alliance underscores the significant implications Proposition 140 could have on the state’s political landscape.

The Libertarian Party of Arizona has also expressed its disapproval, stating that the proposition could jeopardize the electoral prospects for third-party and independent candidates. Their message on social media emphasizes a unified resistance to Proposition 140, urging voters to reject it.

Legislative District 8 Democrats provided insight on their website regarding Proposition 140. They pointed out that the amendment would allow all voters, irrespective of party affiliation, to participate in primaries. While proponents claim it would alleviate political extremism, the accompanying legislation would dictate the number of candidates progressing to the general election, potentially leading to confusion.

Critics have raised several concerns about its implementation. A statement from the Arizona Free Enterprise Club outlined several fears, including excessive power given to the Secretary of State to determine general election candidates, the potential for ballots featuring candidates from only one political party, and complications arising from the voting procedures.

“Proposition 140 will increase tabulation errors, create longer lines at polling places, and significantly delay election results,” the statement warned.
