Rick McCartney, founder of Phoenix-based advertising firm InMedia, has officially entered the race for Congressional District 1, challenging incumbent Republican Rep. David Schweikert. McCartney, 58, is among five Democratic candidates competing for the nomination, joining Amish Shah, Brian Del Vecchio, Marlene Galán-Woods, and Jonathan Treble.

The Cook Political Report categorizes Schweikert’s district as R+1, indicating a competitive environment. Despite Schweikert’s narrow victory by 3.8 points over Shah in 2024, the district is considered a toss-up for the 2026 elections.

As an LGBTQ activist, McCartney has previously chaired the board of one-n-ten, an organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth in Arizona. He positioned his campaign as deeply personal, emphasizing the challenges faced by marginalized communities under the current political climate. McCartney has also led the Maricopa County Workforce Development Board, making him a recognizable figure among local Democrats.

In a recent statement, McCartney emphasized his commitment to the community, saying, “I’m a father, small business owner, and non-profit leader who’s lived in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District for 30 years.” He expressed his goal of flipping the district and advocating for those who have been overlooked.

While McCartney’s messaging has been clear, specific policy proposals remain largely absent from his campaign materials. His website, in its early stages, primarily articulates a mission to oppose Trump’s policies and aims for economic improvements but lacks detailed strategies.

In a conversation with AZCentral, McCartney criticized the current administration, stating, “What we’re seeing with Donald Trump right now is just very destructive to a lot of the great things that we’ve been working on here in this district.” His extensive connections with state Democratic leaders, including involvement in international trips with Governor Katie Hobbs and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, add further weight to his candidacy. According to reporter Laura Gersony, McCartney also possesses strong ties to influential political donors and philanthropists.
