Deer Valley Middle School Staff Rally to Replace Student’s Stolen Scooter with Generous Gift
PHOENIX — In a heartwarming display of community support, Deer Valley Middle School staff rallied to help one of their students, Bryan Garcia-Ramirez, after his new electric scooter was stolen from the school’s property on November 1.
Garcia-Ramirez reported his scooter missing shortly after school, expressing feelings of disappointment for not securing it with a lock. The scooter, a gift from his mother, had been a source of pride for the 8th grader but was taken in broad daylight, as seen in security footage. The video showed a figure in dark clothing climbing the fence, tossing the scooter over, and riding away.
Principal Ray Utter reacted with disbelief, noting, “I’m surprised that a grown adult would steal from a student, knowing full well that it was in a bike rack.” The staff’s immediate response reflected a strong sense of responsibility and compassion.
Wrestling coach Rocky Hernandez led an effort to collect funds from over ten staff members to replace the stolen scooter. “It was no matter how small or big. We just wanted to get something together and help him out,” he said. Within two days, they surprised Bryan with a brand-new electric scooter, inviting his mother to join the moment.
Garcia-Ramirez expressed immense gratitude, stating, “I don’t know how I can repay them. I’ll repay them somehow.” He felt a surge of joy upon receiving the scooter, which he remarked was even faster than the stolen one.
This incident not only highlights the generosity of the school’s faculty but also reinforces the values of community and support. Principal Utter emphasized the importance of putting resources to good use to support their students, stating, “They didn’t even hesitate.” Bryan, now feeling cherished, affirmed, “I love this school so much because of what they did for me.”
The Deer Valley Middle School community continues to exemplify the true spirit of giving, showcasing a strong support network for their students in challenging times.
