Decades-Old Mystery Solved: Arrest Made in Killing of 18-Year-Old in Phoenix

Phoenix police have made a significant arrest in a cold case dating back to 1986, marking it as the oldest homicide arrest in the agency’s history.
Alfred E. Green, 70, was taken into custody this week for his alleged role in the murder of Lachelle Waite, an 18-year-old found dead in her home on January 16, 1986, near 59th Avenue and Thomas Road. Investigators revealed that property was stolen from Waite’s residence.
Though detectives back in 1986 had strong leads regarding the case, they lacked sufficient evidence to press charges at the time. It wasn’t until 2022 that the case saw new life when evidence was submitted for advanced DNA analysis, ultimately leading to the identification of Green as the prime suspect.
Green’s arrest comes nearly 39 years after the crime, highlighting the challenges and advancements in investigative techniques over the decades. Following an indictment filed in Maricopa County Superior Court last month, Green appeared in court, where prosecutors accused him of strangling Waite and immediately selling stolen items.
During the hearing, when confronted with the allegations, Green remarked, “I know she did a lot of lying.” His bail has been set at $1.5 million, reflecting the severity of the charges against him.
This case continues to resonate within the Phoenix community as authorities strive to provide closure for victims and families affected by such tragedies.
