PHOENIX — A severe accident involving a wrong-way driver on Interstate 17 is under investigation following a crash that occurred Wednesday morning.

The incident took place at milepost 196, near 7th Avenue in South Phoenix. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that the southbound lanes have been closed, with no estimated time for reopening.

DPS has confirmed that the wrong-way driver, a young woman, was killed in the accident. The other vehicle involved was driven by a man who sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. Authorities have yet to release the identities of those involved.
