Two individuals were apprehended by Maricopa police for their involvement in a stolen vehicle incident. The theft involved a pickup truck taken from Chandler. Charges were filed on Monday against Paul V. Gildea, 35, and Ashley R. Cruz, 32.

According to police reports, Gildea faces multiple charges, including possession of dangerous drugs, resisting arrest, and displaying a stolen license plate. Cruz is charged with drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and tampering with evidence.

The situation unfolded when a Maricopa police officer spotted a 2022 Toyota Tacoma at a Circle K store on Honeycutt Road. The vehicle’s license plate indicated it was reported stolen. After confirming the vehicle was unoccupied, the officer waited for its return.

Upon Gildea’s exit from the store, the officer inquired about the truck’s ownership. Gildea claimed it was his, which led to his immediate detention. However, he allegedly attempted to flee after being handcuffed, prompting the officer to tackle him and place him in a patrol car.

At the same time, Cruz was located inside the women’s restroom of the store. Officers found her attempting to flush illegal substances down the toilet. A subsequent search recovered a clear baggie containing white powder, believed to be illegal narcotics, as well as a small colored pill identified as fentanyl in Cruz’s pocket.

Further investigation of the stolen truck revealed additional drug paraphernalia, such as burnt straws and a scale. All items were seized by the authorities. Following the arrest, Cruz was taken to the Pinal County jail, while Gildea was transferred to a local hospital to treat injuries sustained during the incident.

Both Gildea and Cruz could face up to five years in prison if convicted on the charges filed against them.
