Cyclist and artist Joel Eagan struck and killed by car on Dry Creek Road

A tragic accident occurred on Friday, February 7, in Sedona when 54-year-old Joel David Eagan was struck and killed in a vehicle-versus-bicycle collision at the intersection of Thunder Mountain Road and Dry Creek Road around 6:38 p.m.

Emergency responders from the Sedona Fire District, including ambulances from Stations 1 and 4, were dispatched along with local police. Although a helicopter was initially called to the scene, it was later canceled. Upon arrival, officers found Eagan severely injured and unresponsive. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses indicated that Eagan, who was riding without a helmet and any bike lights, attempted to maneuver around the vehicle by accelerating and turning directly in its path as it proceeded from a stop sign. The vehicle driver, a local resident, remained at the scene, and investigators reported no signs of criminal action or impairment.

In the aftermath of the incident, Sedona police closed the road while diverting northbound traffic at Remuda Road. Public safety crews cleared the area by 7:26 p.m., but a Nixle alert about the closure was not issued until 8:32 p.m., delaying public notification until the arrival of the Yavapai County Medical Examiner.

Eagan had lived in Sedona for more than 24 years and was respected as a local artist and photographer, showcasing his work from various locations, including Telluride, Maui, and Puerto Rico. He was known for frequently riding his motorized bicycle in West Sedona.

The Yavapai County Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the incident. As stated by Sedona Communications Director Lauren Browne, full details will be made available once the investigation concludes.
