Courage and Community Rally Around ASU Survivor Mara Daffron in Her Healing Journey
A stabbing incident on September 19 at Arizona State University’s West Campus left one student injured but alive. Mara Daffron, the victim, is now sharing her journey of recovery with the community.
The sophomore, studying sports business, was attacked by Kaci Sloan, a fellow student. Daffron describes the moment she was stabbed in her left triceps and back, which resulted in injuries to her spleen. “Thankfully she tripped before she got to me,” Daffron recounted. Immediate help arrived from classmates and professors, but it was Navy veteran Matt McCormick’s intervention that proved crucial. He restrained the attacker until authorities arrived, earning accolades for his bravery from the Daffron family.
The attack has deeply affected Daffron’s family, especially her mother. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about it,” Launi Daffron said, emphasizing the lasting emotional impact. Mara underwent two surgeries and is physically on the mend, although she occasionally battles nightmares. Her new companion, a Mini Dachshund named Rex, has provided her comfort during the recovery process.
Daffron plans to continue her education online this spring, aiming to return to campus by fall. “I know the fear will resurface when I get back,” she acknowledged. Despite her challenges, both mother and daughter express immense pride in each other’s resilience. “I had no idea that Mara is as brave as she is,” her mother remarked.
The local community is showing support for Daffron, with a fundraiser organized by the Goodyear chapter of Helping One Woman scheduled for January 15. “Over 500 people were praying for me,” Daffron stated, attributing her strength during a challenging time to the community’s support.
Reflecting on her experience, Daffron finds solace in her faith, stating, “There’s this Bible verse I saw a few weeks ago… ‘The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.’” She believes this sentiment captures her story of survival.
Meanwhile, Kaci Sloan faces charges related to the incident, with a trial set for February 2025. The Daffrons have refrained from commenting on the ongoing investigation.
