Shooting death in Homestead was an accident, coroner confirms

Medical examiners have confirmed that a shooting incident in Homestead nearly two months ago was an accident. Jacob N. Begaye, 31, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while at a family member’s home on North Wilford Avenue around 9 a.m. on June 29.

According to Maricopa Police Department (MPD) spokesperson Monica Williams, the investigation indicated that Begaye was likely cleaning or assembling his firearm when it discharged accidentally. He was found with a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Pinal County Medical Examiner’s Office verified that Begaye’s death was accidental, ruling out homicide and suicide. Begaye was visiting family during the incident, emphasizing the tragic nature of the event.

Begaye, originally from Tuba City, had been residing in Tempe at the time of his death. The home where the incident occurred is owned by a close relative of his, confirming the familial connection at the time of the accident.
