Cops watch GPS as stolen truck speeds off at 100mph, perp has no clue

If you noticed a Siteworks Landscaping truck speeding over 100 miles per hour on John Wayne Parkway from Maricopa to Hidden Valley on Wednesday, the company wants to clarify: it wasn’t their vehicle involved.

Maricopa Police responded early that morning to a report of a theft at a Honeycutt Avenue address. A pickup truck valued at approximately $10,000 and a white box trailer worth $3,500 had been taken, both belonging to Siteworks Landscaping, based in Chandler.

The suspect, 30-year-old Luis Alejandro Durand Magallanes, allegedly took a white 2013 Ford F-150, which was outfitted with a GPS tracking system. This technology not only aided law enforcement in locating the stolen items but also revealed that he drove at excessive speeds during the theft, as detailed in a probable cause statement.

Detectives Adam Hill and Tyler Pappas traced the truck’s GPS signals to a property on Sage Street in Hidden Valley. There, they discovered the stolen trailer; however, the pickup truck was initially missing. Later, around noon, Magallanes returned to the site driving the stolen F-150, which still displayed Siteworks Landscaping’s decals, but he denied any involvement in the thefts, as reported by police.

The owner of the Sage Street property remains undisclosed, with the address redacted in police documents. Records show that Magallanes resides in Tortosa.

Currently, Magallanes faces three felony auto theft charges and has been booked into the Pinal County jail. If found guilty, he could potentially face over 20 years in prison.
