Congresswoman Ansari traveling to El Salvador to visit man mistakenly deported from US

PHOENIX — U.S. Representative Yassamin Ansari, a Democrat from Phoenix, announced plans to travel to El Salvador to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident mistakenly deported last month.

Abrego Garcia’s deportation has drawn significant criticism from immigration advocates. He had previously been granted protection against deportation, raising concerns about procedural failures within U.S. immigration authorities.

The Supreme Court has mandated the Trump administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return following an admission from immigration officials acknowledging an “administrative error” that led to his removal, according to reports from the Associated Press.

Ansari, representing Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District, emphasized that this incident reflects a larger “constitutional crisis.” She stated, “If this can happen to Mr. Garcia, it can happen to any of us.” Ansari recounted her family’s escape from an oppressive regime in Iran, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Contradicting Ansari’s concerns, President Trump’s advisors, along with El Salvador’s leadership, have indicated that there is insufficient justification for returning Abrego Garcia to the U.S., as reported by the AP.

Additionally, government officials have alleged that Abrego Garcia has ties to gangs, a claim his legal representatives strongly refute.

Ansari previously served on the Phoenix City Council and was elected to her current position last November, succeeding U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego.
