Michael Hopwood recently unveiled his long-awaited documentary, “Living Legends: 66-0,” which chronicles the remarkable journey of Compton High School’s championship basketball teams from the late 1960s. The film, available now, is the culmination of over a decade of dedication and adversity.

Hopwood’s narrative highlights the all-Black Compton teams, who triumphed over significant discrimination to achieve an extraordinary 66-game winning streak. During his senior year in 1968, the Tarbabes finished with an undefeated record of 32-0, claiming both state and national championships while outscoring opponents by an average of 31 points per game.

Despite this historic achievement, Hopwood was disheartened when no member from the legendary Compton teams was recognized in the California Interscholastic Federation’s list of the top 100 high school athletes of the past century. This oversight fueled his determination to produce the documentary.

Initially starting production in 2015, Hopwood faced various challenges, including a lengthy legal battle over copyright issues that delayed the film’s distribution for five years. He secured full ownership of the project last year, allowing him to finally share this important story.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Hopwood expressed. “The obstacles were significant, especially as a first-time filmmaker. I had to navigate a steep learning curve that cost me time, effort, and money.” His commitment paid off, as he describes sharing the film as a “blessing.”

Many of his former teammates continue to reside in Compton, and Hopwood emphasizes the strong community ties that bond them. “It’s validating to hear from people about events they were unaware of during that era,” he said. “Our journey extends beyond just basketball; it’s about recognizing the broader context in which we achieved our success.”

“Living Legends: 66-0” offers an unforgettable insight into a pivotal chapter in sports history. The film is now available for rent or purchase, inviting viewers to engage with this significant narrative.
