Commanders’ Jayden Daniels Credits ASU for Paving His Path to Success

PHOENIX – Jayden Daniels, quarterback for the Washington Commanders, reflected positively on his time at Arizona State University as he visited his college roots in Tempe ahead of a matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. “It started all this, laid the foundation,” Daniels remarked on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to those who had a hand in shaping his football journey. The relationships he forged during his time at ASU still hold significant value for him.
Returning to the site of his college beginnings, Daniels reminisced about his early career. The 2019 ASU recruit spent three years with the Sun Devils before transferring to LSU, where he fine-tuned his skills. His tenure at LSU resulted in 6,725 passing yards and 57 touchdowns over two seasons, culminating in a Heisman Trophy win and making him a coveted prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Daniels’ decision to transfer came amid discussions regarding his desire to compete at a higher level. He attributes part of his success to the resources and talent available at LSU. Despite the controversy surrounding his exit from Tempe, he maintains a fondness for the relationships built during his time there, including his ties with former ASU coach Herm Edwards. “Phenomenal head coach, phenomenal man,” he stated. The two continue to keep in touch today.
The friendships formed in Tempe with fellow NFL players such as Brandon Aiyuk and Rachaad White remain important to Daniels. “It’s awesome. It started here, we grew up and to see everybody live out their dreams,” he stated, honoring the bonds forged during their formative years.
Reflecting on his growth over the past five years, Daniels noted how he matured from a freshman to a starting quarterback. “I came here at 18 and was still trying to find myself,” he shared, discussing the personal development that came with his transfer experience. “That move helped a lot in figuring out who I am as a person.”
Koki Riley, a reporter for The Advocate, witnessed Daniels evolve, particularly in terms of confidence. He noted the transformation that Daniels underwent as he found success at LSU. “He was more comfortable in his skin,” Riley observed, highlighting a pivotal moment during a game against Cincinnati, where Daniels confidently called for aggressive plays, a stark contrast to his earlier college demeanor.
In a recent performance, Daniels showcased his capabilities, leading the Commanders to a 38-33 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. With a remarkable completion rate of 91.3%, he left a lasting impression, receiving NFL Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efficiency and performance.
Former ASU wide receiver Mekhi Metcalf elaborated on Daniels’ earlier standout qualities, recalling his ability to impress even as a freshman amidst seasoned players. “He had that ‘it’ factor,” Metcalf stated. His consistent dedication and work ethic indicated an upward trajectory right from the start.
As the rookie quarterback continues to impress in the NFL, his humility remains unwavering. Regarding his Monday Night Football success, he downplayed its significance, asserting, “It’s another game. That game in the past doesn’t even mean anything anymore.”
With an eye on further accomplishments, Daniels looks to solidify his impressive rookie campaign this Sunday against the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.
