Army Captain Sam Brown (ret.), a decorated combat veteran and West Point graduate, has encountered significant political hurdles in his nomination for the role of Undersecretary of Memorial Affairs in the National Cemetery Administration. Nominated by former President Donald Trump, Brown’s confirmation is reportedly being obstructed by Democratic Senators Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT).

On social media platform X, VA Secretary Doug Collins expressed his frustration, claiming Brown’s confirmation is being thwarted for “cheap political points.” He labeled the senators’ actions as “awful behavior,” urging accountability.

In response, Senator Gallego criticized Collins, suggesting his concern centers solely on political appointees rather than genuine service to disabled veterans. He alleged that Collins plans to arbitrarily dismiss thousands of VA employees, echoing the sentiment of a heated political landscape.

Senator Blumenthal echoed these sentiments, asserting that Collins is merely distracting Americans from crucial issues. He emphasized the need for transparency regarding political nominees and alleged plans to cut VA staff. His remarks referred to claims based on a leaked memo from the American Federation of Government Employees regarding potential reductions in VA staffing.

Despite the controversy, the VA has shared data indicating that while over 11,000 employees expressed interest in deferred resignations, cuts will not compromise veterans’ healthcare services. During a Senate hearing, Collins reassured, “We will not be cutting benefits and health care, only improving them.”

Addressing the situation, Brown voiced gratitude to Secretary Collins in a statement shared on social media. “I’ve served our nation once with honor. I’ve been nominated by President Trump to do it again. Unfortunately, there are Democrat Senators who want to block my service to the great USA, our beloved veterans, and their families,” he stated.
