Clothes Closet expanding with addition of showers, intake rooms

The Clothes Closet, a nonprofit organization in Lake Havasu City, is poised to enhance its facilities with a new addition designed to assist those experiencing homelessness.

Christine Watson, the founder and CEO of the nonprofit, announced plans for the expansion, which will include two handicap-accessible showers and two intake rooms for clients in need. The aim is to provide essential services that promote dignity and self-sufficiency, particularly for individuals living in their vehicles.

Watson expressed optimism about the project in a Facebook post, highlighting its potential impact. The showers, intended for those without regular access to bathing facilities, will support efforts to reintegrate individuals into the workforce and boost their self-esteem.

This new initiative is partially funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). In 2022, the Lake Havasu City Council designated ARPA funds to 11 local organizations, awarding $128,000 to the Clothes Closet. Watson indicated that these funds have already contributed to operational costs, such as insurance and utilities, as well as the purchase of vital laundry equipment, including three washers and dryers.

Watson reported that the laundry services have been beneficial for clients who lack access to such facilities. With the construction of the showers underway, the nonprofit anticipates a significant positive shift for patrons who currently face challenges in basic hygiene.

While the completion date for the new addition remains not firmly set, it must adhere to the ARPA funding timeline, which mandates finalization by year-end. Watson noted that, in addition to leveraging ARPA funds, various materials and labor have been donated by local supporters. Interestingly, some volunteers were former clients who received assistance from the Clothes Closet in the past.

“Most of the people who come in here are very appreciative; they’ll come in and thank you so much for helping them get back up on their feet,” Watson remarked.

The Clothes Closet continues to actively fundraise for this project. Recently, the organization held a golf tournament that Watson described as successful. Another major fundraising event is scheduled for October 25.
