Claytoonz: Dead Department Walking

Linda McMahon, the former wrestling executive, has taken a controversial role within the Trump administration, widely perceived as part of an agenda to dismantle the Department of Education. Her lack of experience in education raises significant concerns about the underlying motives of this appointment. Republicans have sought to eliminate the department since its inception under President Jimmy Carter in 1979, hoping to dismantle what many consider an unnecessary bureaucracy.

Previous attempts to abolish the Department of Education, such as those by Ronald Reagan, fell short due to Democratic opposition in Congress. Ironically, rather than decrease federal spending on education, Reagan and George W. Bush expanded the department’s budget. Currently, Donald Trump is pushing for an executive order to eliminate the department entirely, despite lacking the authority to do so independently.

Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk have already made substantial cuts to the agency, which has a workforce of around 4,000 employees, the smallest of any cabinet-level department. During McMahon’s swearing-in, Trump remarked, “I want her to put herself out of a job,” alluding to his intent for the department’s demise. However, McMahon’s financial standing, like many in the Trump administration, suggests her potential job loss may not generate much sympathy.

The appointment of such an inexperienced individual as McMahon raises questions about the administration’s competence. Critics argue that hiring someone like McMahon signals a disregard for the educational system’s integrity. It reflects a broader trend, where key positions are filled by individuals lacking relevant expertise.

Legislation is required to officially eliminate the Department of Education, but with Congress currently lacking sufficient support, it appears destined to remain, albeit in a weakened state. The department was originally established to ensure equitable education opportunities, especially for underprivileged students, vulnerable if left solely to state governance.

Trump’s agenda targets the department by labeling it as controlled by “radicals, zealots, and Marxists.” He argues that its involvement in local education decisions, including matters of segregation and funding, is excessive. This approach resonates with a base that favors a more privatized education system at the potential expense of disadvantaged students and those with disabilities.

While advocating for local autonomy in education, the administration has simultaneously created initiatives to penalize schools promoting diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. This contradiction highlights a selective approach to governmental intervention in education policy.

Furthermore, an inquiry into universities regarding alleged antisemitism ties into a broader critique of free speech on campuses, especially concerning politically charged topics. This has led many to see these investigations as a veiled effort to suppress dissenting views.

As discussions surrounding funding cuts to government agencies continue, Trump’s strategy appears increasingly driven by conspiracy theories and partisan rhetoric. The legitimacy of such drastic actions, including significant personnel cuts within the Department of Education, is under scrutiny.

Critics contend that undermining public education aligns with a long-term Republican strategy to cultivate a voter base that remains uninformed and uneducated. As the political landscape evolves, pivotal endorsements, like that of wrestling icon The Undertaker for Trump, symbolize changing tides, leaving advocates of democratic principles concerned for the future.
