On Sunday, November 26, 2024, the Maricopa Senior Center buzzed with activity as over 80 seniors gathered for a potluck luncheon celebrating an early “Eat and Greet Thanksgiving Holiday.” The event showcased the center’s commitment to fostering community among its members.

Every Tuesday, from 10 to 11 a.m., the center hosts a welcoming meet-and-greet featuring free donuts and coffee, providing a friendly environment for newcomers. Coordinated by Chance Love, the center’s activities have become a vital part of the community’s social fabric. Love describes the center as a “safe and welcoming place” for seniors and veterans, encouraging socialization and lifelong learning.

Since its inception 3½ years ago, the center has seen continuous growth. “We average about 12 new members a month,” Love reported, noting that March was particularly busy with approximately 30 new sign-ups. The influx of new members reflects Maricopa’s growing senior population, now estimated at around 15,000 within the town’s total population of 75,000, according to Councilmember Bob Marsh.

Among the center’s array of activities are Bingo games held twice a month, a “Lunch and Learn” session every third Friday, and daily card games. The center also offers free blood pressure checks and movie matinees. The highlight of the calendar is its signature potluck, a cherished tradition during the holiday season. “We do a lot to keep them busy,” Love added.

Chance Love, a native of Inglewood, California, has been part of the Maricopa community since 2006. He earned a degree in liberal studies from Arizona State University in 2013. His experience emphasizes creating lasting connections among seniors. “It’s about making lasting neighbors,” Love noted.

The Maricopa Senior Center welcomes newcomers with open arms. Those interested can get in touch by calling 520-233-2400 or emailing Chance.Love@Maricopa-AZ.gov. The center operates from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, providing essential services and activities for the senior community. For seniors who may have transportation challenges, options such as the Maricopa Express Transit Dial-a-Ride are available.

Love concluded, “We’re here to offer quality service,” highlighting the center’s mission to enrich the lives of its participants.
