City to host 3 meetings on new sales tax next month

Maricopa city officials are taking proactive steps to secure funding for State Route 347. This follows previous unsuccessful attempts to impose a half-cent sales tax for road improvements. Next month, three open houses will be held to inform residents about the proposed half-penny sales tax aimed at widening the highway.

Scheduled for April 10, 19, and 22, these open houses aim to facilitate community engagement. Residents will have the chance to discuss the proposal with city staff, though no formal presentations are planned. This format is intended to encourage dialogue and address questions directly.

City leaders are optimistic this approach will bear fruit, especially after a 2017 measure was overturned by the Arizona Supreme Court. A subsequent attempt by Pinal County in 2022 fell short by just three votes.

To circumvent potential voter rejection, Maricopa’s city council will vote on the tax proposal during their meeting on May 6. City Manager Ben Bitter emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “This is our opportunity to secure local funding and position SR 347 for inclusion in ADOT’s plan without unnecessary delays.”

Support appears significant; an unscientific poll conducted by InMaricopa.com showed that 60% of 1,373 local residents favored the new sales tax.

For further details regarding the open house locations and times, residents are encouraged to visit the city’s official website.
