In a recent gathering at Roots Eatery, Kelly Anderson, the executive director of the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce, made headlines with notable announcements.

On Tuesday evening, she not only revealed a name change for the organization, but also shared insights from Mayor Nancy Smith regarding property tax expectations.

“The mayor informed me that they’re anticipating another property tax reduction,” Anderson stated, eliciting interest among attendees.

This potential reduction marks a continuation of a trend in Maricopa, where property taxes have been cut for six consecutive years.

Could this year be the seventh in a series of reductions? A question many are pondering.

Inquiries directed to Mayor Smith regarding the rumors were addressed by city spokesperson Monica Williams. She clarified, “The mayor expressed her anticipation of a property tax decrease this year, but there are no further updates at this moment.”

Williams also noted that the city is “still in the budget planning process,” with the tentative budget slated for presentation to the Maricopa City Council on May 6.

Previous discussions at city meetings suggested further tax reductions are likely, reinforcing optimism among residents.

City Manager Ben Bitter, during a Futures Planning Meeting last month, indicated that fiscal responsibility remains a priority. “Talk about increasing taxes isn’t taken lightly,” he remarked, hinting at the possibility of a seventh consecutive reduction.

Last year, the city lowered the tax rate from 4.17% to 3.87% and decreased the secondary rate from 0.84% to 0.78%.

With upcoming budget discussions on the horizon, many residents are hopeful for more positive news in May.
